Ceres – Incense Burners

2024
Collaboration with Pilo Marimon (Sweden)

Series of handmade stoneware ceramic pieces, with numbered stamp. Variable dimensions: approximately 12.5 x 20 cm.

Ceres is a series of incense burners that combine the spiritual with the physical. The name "Ceres" plays on the Spanish word "seres," meaning "beings," reflecting the essence of our creations. It also alludes to the dwarf planet Ceres located between Mars and Jupiter, symbolizing the space between Pilo in Sweden and me in Aotearoa (New Zealand). This name encapsulates our collaboration across distances, creating something unique in the shared space between us.

Inspired by ancestral guardians and natural textures, these pieces were initially conceptualized through my digital drawings using Photoshop and Illustrator. To explore the three-dimensional forms, I utilized artificial intelligence tools, which primarily assisted with the 3D aspects of the designs.

The digital concepts were then transformed into tangible clay pieces by Pilo, bringing our collaborative vision to life. This process explores the interaction between the digital and the analog, bridging modern technology with traditional craftsmanship. Ceres represents a fusion of artistic disciplines, highlighting the seamless integration of design, technology, and handmade artistry.

The Collaboration

Our collaboration began as an experimental project, connecting across time zones between Aotearoa (New Zealand) and Sweden. The contrast of day and night in our respective locations added a unique rhythm to our creative process. Through several video calls, we shared ideas, sketches, and feedback, discussing how to bring digital designs into the physical realm.

Coming from the same city and sharing a common cultural background, we found a mutual understanding that enriched our partnership. This shared universe allowed for a seamless flow of ideas as we navigated the journey from conceptual design to physical creation—each acting as a filter through which the work evolved.

Work in Progress

Ceres began as an experimental project and continues to evolve. The back-and-forth between digital concepts and clay materialization emphasizes the ephemeral nature of tangible objects. We are excited to announce that the series will soon be available for purchase, inviting others to experience the fusion of our collaborative efforts.
